My Express Message
The tragic events of 11 September 2001 — now known universally as 911 — rocked New York to the core. On that fateful morning, a number of Sri Chinmoy's students had just arrived at the United Nations Headquarters to begin work, while others commuted to their jobs in financial institutions and various businesses in Manhattan, all of which were in close proximity to the World Trade Centre. At the same time, a number of Sri Chinmoy's students were in the midst of staging a trio of ultra races — 700 miles, 1,000 miles and 1,300 miles — at Wards Island, located between the East River and the Harlem River in Manhattan. At certain points on the course, the participants had a panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline and, on that day, they were among the first to see the dense plumes of smoke and ash rising from Lower Manhattan.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, not only the city of New York but the entire world was engulfed by feelings of horror and helplessness. At this critical time, Sri Chinmoy wrote a message of consolation to his students around the world. Although the precise date he composed this message is obscured, it was received by fax in Australia on 15 September 2001.
