```During the 1970s, Sri Chinmoy published many of his translations from Nolini's Bengali writings. The following six commentaries on the Rigveda were not published in New York at that time. They were originally published serially in the "Mother India" from October 1962 through to May 1963 and signed simply 'Chinmoy'. Along with Sri Chinmoy's many other translations of Nolini's writings, they have since been published by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Press in "The Collected Works of Nolini Kanta Gupta". These particular commentaries appear without attribution in Volume 8: "Vedic Hymns". From the opening sentence of the first commentary — "Cosmic creation is a great and sublime sacrifice" — the beauty and clarity of Sri Chinmoy's language is so striking and memorable. He shows us that translated works do not have to be a literal equivalent of the original, for the translator strives above all to express the meaning of the original. Indeed, in some exceptional cases, the translation may be said to possess a power that is of its own making and not dependent on the original. Jorge Luis Borges once made the enigmatic comment, "The original is unfaithful to the translation." In this instance, the penetrating intellect of the savant Nolini Kanta Gupta has been expressed through the unique poetic soul of Sri Chinmoy. Both the Bengali and the English stand on their own as works of excellence.
