Dedication

I most prayerfully dedicate Mother India: Infinity's Beauty-Eye, Immortality's Fragrance-Heart to Sri Aurobindo, Mother India’s beloved Patriot-Avatar-Son, on the occasion of his 125th Birth Anniversary and India’s 50th Independence Anniversary

1.

My Mother India’s soul
Is made of
God’s blossoming Smiles.

2.

My Mother India’s heart
Is made of
God’s streaming Tears.

3.

My Mother India’s life
Is made of
God’s mounting Visions.

4.

Long one hundred and ninety years ago,
My Mother India was helplessly
And hopelessly subjugated
To the mighty British yoke.

5.

On August 15th, 1947
The darkest bondage-night
Disappeared,
Only to be gloriously replaced
By the brightest freedom-light.

6.

Down the sweep of centuries
The Absolute Lord Supreme
Has blessed you, Mother,
With a few choice children
Of His own highest Divinity.

7.

Your son Rama
(Sri Ramachandra)
Embodied and revealed
The Message of shadowless Promise
And sleepless Sacrifice.

8.

Your son Krishna
(Sri Krishna)
Embodied, revealed and manifested
The Message of Love-Delight within,
Love-Delight without
And Love-Delight all-where.

9.

Your son Siddhartha
(The Buddha)
Was the possessor of Eternity’s
Infinite Compassion-Ocean.

10.

Your son Chaitanya
(Sri Chaitanya)
Became the Beauty
Of God’s own Love
And the Fragrance
Of God’s own Forgiveness.

11.

Your son Ramakrishna
(Sri Ramakrishna)
Became the Illumination-Tower
Of the synthesis of all world-religions.

12.

Your son Narendranath
(Swami Vivekananda)
Became the fastest
World-progress-acceleration-dynamo.

13.

Your son Aurobindo
(Sri Aurobindo)
Became the harbinger
Of the Supermind-descent
Into the heartbeat of humanity
And the champion supreme
In the cause of mankind’s
Nature-transformation.

The Mother1

An endless birth from mute Eternity
Within Thy Bosom dawns at Thy Will supreme.
Thy blissful Touch on all the limbs of earth
Bestows a thrill of joy, unknown, extreme.

In Thee is hushed, O Mother!
our empty cry.
We are Thy stoic sons of the fire-pure way,
Firm-poised in dreadful hours of earth’s blind drag;
No more the harrow of doom shadows our day.

Proceedest Thou across the path of night
With Thy flame-white Love to change its face and fate.
Thou art the matchless fruit of Thy cosmos’ seed;
In Thee the key of Transformation’s Gate.

- Chinmoy (1955)

Our Mother, the Mother of the Golden All, the Mother of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, accepted the human cloak at her sweet will with her boundless Power for the full manifestation of the Divine here on earth. Her mission in life was to create a transformed humanity.

She is the sole hope of Nectar-Bliss for those who are burning with an unquenchable thirst for the unique Birth. And she will be crowned with Triumph only when we, her children, cease to be the finite.

15.

My Mother India,
You are telling me
That God cannot be seen
Under a microscope;
He cannot be seen with a telescope;
He can only be seen, felt,
Addressed and realised
With a sleeplessly God-aspiring heart
And God-serving life.

16.

My Mother India,
You are telling your God-seeking children
That once they see the Face of God,
They will become God’s Face
In everyone and in everything.

17.

O soul of Mother India,
From you I have learned
That the oldest Dream of God
Was human aspiration
And the youngest Dream of God
Is divine manifestation.

18.

O my Mother India’s soul,
You are telling me
That you have a plethora
Of earth-walking intellectual figures,
But what you truly need are
Earth-ascending, Heaven-descending
Truth-seekers and God-lovers.

19.

O soul of Mother India,
You are telling me
That what we need
Is not the sound of vastness;
What we actually need
Is the silence of fulness.

20.

O soul of Mother India,
You are asking me
To be an inspiration, aspiration
And dedication-supplier,
So that I will be entitled to become
A Heaven-perfection-satisfaction-gatherer.

21.

I am a staunch Indian Hindu.
Therefore, I feel
In the inmost recesses of my heart
That right from tomorrow
Everyone will change
And everything will change
For the better.
Why?
Because in secrecy supreme
I am receiving this Message
From the God-realisation-soul of India.

22.

The Indian mind
Is not in a chronic state of insecurity,
But definitely it is
In an endless state of uncertainty.

23.

O my Mother India,
You are telling me
That I must immediately
Do away with the brooding cloud
Of self-doubt and God-doubt.
Indeed,
A mind of doubt nowhere can see
The Beauty of God’s Eye
Or breathe in
The Fragrance of God’s Heart.

24.

When Mother India devotedly sits
At God’s Feet,
God immediately says to Mother India,
“My child, that is not
The right place.
For you, the right place
Is in My Heart-Garden.”

25.

I immensely like
Mother India’s outer life,
With its God-revelation-festivities.
I sleeplessly love
Mother India’s inner life,
With its God-worship-shrines.

26.

My Mother India,
Miss Margaret Noble came from Ireland.
Her Master transformed her into Nivedita,
The God-consecrated soul,
To serve you unconditionally
And specially to awaken your daughters
To look inward, upward and forward.
Swami Vivekananda’s Nivedita,
Our Sister Nivedita,
Your most faithful service
Will forever shine
In India's sacred heart-shrines.

27.

My Mother India,
Miss Agnes Bojaxhiu came from Albania
To claim you as her heart-home
And to sleeplessly serve
Your poor, sick and helpless children.
This Albanian is now
India’s beloved Mother Teresa.
O Mother India,
As these two non-Indians
Claimed you and became
Indian to the core,
Even so, we would like to offer them
Our untiring gratitude
From the inmost recesses of our hearts.

28.

My Mother India,
When I think of myself as an Indian
And take pride in my Indian birth,
I immediately start soaring
Upon the melodies and cadences
Of your love.

29.

The God-intoxicated Vedic India
Of the hoary past
Cannot forever remain
Buried in stark oblivion.
There shall come a time
When the vision of the Vedic seers
Will be resurrected
And will mightily, convincingly,
Gloriously and triumphantly
Cover the length and breadth
Of the world.

30.

If it is true
That India was a land
Of God-dreamers,
Even so, it is equally true
That India, either in the near future
Or in the distant future,
Will become a nation
Of man-awakeners and God-servers.

31.

My Mother India,
When my mind doubts
Your world-illumination-capacity,
God in no time withdraws
His Compassion-Eye
And His Forgiveness-Heart from me.

32.

My Mother India,
O Mother,
You are Infinity’s
Beauty-Eye;
You are Immortality’s
Fragrance-Heart.

33.

My Mother India,
Beauty incarnate in God’s entire creation
Was your myriad-minded Rabindranath.
He was the sun of your own heart-garden,
A golden song
Sung by the Singer Supreme.
Tagore’s was a poetic heart
And a prophetic eye:
“Look everywhere and see God’s Beauty,
And then, O Ind, raise your proud head
Towards the Highest.”

34.

My Mother India,
Your pride, your hope-noon,
Your all-transforming crest
Was Aurobindo.
Wet with your tears, his human heart.
The thunder-blaze of his volcano-pen
Awoke the sleeping souls
To free their Motherland.
Aurobindo,
The zenith Leader of the dire revolt,
With rising sparks of Ind was all aglow
In him we found our altar of sacrifice.
From his words and deeds
Drank we deep delight ambrosial.

35.

The strength of ancient India
Was found in self-searching
And Truth-discovering.
May the strength of modern India
Be found in self-giving
And peace-invoking.

36.

Out of His infinite Bounty,
God tells us, His Indian children,
That no matter what we do
And no matter what befalls us,
God will keep His Heart
Always high, very high
And full of unconditional Hopes.

37.

My Mother India,
Many politicians, many patriots
And many revolutionaries
Offered their lives
To bring about your independence.
Among those there was a patriot,
Revolutionary, independence-dreamer
And Mother India-lover
Whose very name became
Synonymous with sacrifice.
He is Netaji,
The Leader Supreme.
Netaji, our beloved Netaji,
The year 1997 most affectionately
And most proudly celebrates
Your Birth Centenary.
Every Indian heart
Is your home.

38.

Each and every Indian
Became divine excitement within
And divine jubilation without
On August 15th, 1947.

39.

Only a professor of stupidity
Multiplied by absurdity
Can dare to say
That the partition of India
Was unquestionably indispensable.

40.

India's vastness intimidated
Some political leaders.
Therefore, they wanted to be associated with
And wedded to the comfort of
Division-security.
Some people are afraid of swimming in the ocean.
They prefer to swim in a tiny pool
For their own safety
Although experienced, courageous
And kind-hearted ocean-swimmers
Are ready willing and eager to teach them
How to swim in the vast ocean.

41.

Alas, how I wish we all
Could have been inundated
With aspiration within
And inspiration without
Right from the very birth
Of our Independence Day,
August 15th, 1947,
To devotedly assist our Mother India
In taking the spiritual leadership
Of the entire world!

42.

Mother India,
When I lovingly, affectionately
And self-givingly meditate on you,
God Himself comes to me
To share with me His immense Desire
To make you the Pilot Supreme
Of the world-boat.

43.

My Mother India tells her children,
“Love all countries
The way you love me.
Cherish no negativity
Against other countries.
You must realise that your own negativity
Will eventually drag you down
Into your own mind’s abysmal abyss.”

44.

My Mother India,
When I look at your eyes,
I clearly see
That you are in the fondest embrace
Of God’s Fulness-Peace.

45.

My Mother India,
No matter where I am physically,
I most devotedly long
To keep my God-seeker-life
In the foothills
Of your heart’s Himalayas.

46.

My Mother India,
When I ask you how I can truly
Make you happy,
You always have one answer:
“My child, I want you and your heart
To be always on your knees
In gratitude-prayer
To the Absolute Lord Beloved Supreme.”

47.

Who am I?
I am my Mother India’s
Compassion-flooded miracle-child
To carry her inspiration-eye
And aspiration-heart
To her near and far country-relatives.

48.

My Mother India,
Even for a fleeting second,
Do not allow us to forget
Our Lord Krishna’s —
Your choicest son Krishna’s —
Immortal utterance:
“Whenever righteousness declines
And unrighteousness prevails,
Myself I embody and manifest.
For the protection of the good,
And for the destruction of the wicked,
And for the establishment
Of the inner Code of life,
I come into being from age to age.”
