Insane with Grief

Sri Chinmoy's beloved elder brother Chitta passed away suddenly on 2 July 1998 at the age of 82. At that time, his sister Lily was also very ill. She was being cared for in the Nursing Home of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry. Sri Chinmoy describes how Lily became insane with grief when she was told the news of Chitta's passing.

They fed my sister and then Dr. Shalila, who is very nice, gave her the news. When they gave her the news, three nurses could not control her. My sister is so sick, so weak. She cannot get up by herself. She needs help to get up. But when she heard the news, she became insane, insane with grief. Such a bond between sister and brother! She was kicking them. Three nurses could not stop her. Then they took her to see Chitta. It was too much, too much, too much.

The first day, she suffered a lot. The second day, she was only consoling me, consoling me, saying, "He did the right thing, he did the right thing. See how I am suffering! He did not want to die like me. The day he could not walk, he wanted to die."

When I went there after two days, she was consoled. She started consoling me. She said, "It was good. See, I am here. For the last two years, what am I doing?"

He didn't want to take this kind of help. He always said, "I won't take any help. I want to go. The day I can't walk, I want to die."

Lily gave me the same message as my brother: "Do not think of him. Go and do your own work. He will be very happy if you do your own work. You do your own work and he will be very happy. Do not stop."
